The manufacturers charge a premium for separates - that's not where their business is. However, this route does have the benefit of allowing you to control the "cashflow" - you could add pads over time if needed.

I would prefer not to apply triggers/pads/mesh to shells of an acoustic set.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Why, as a matter of interest? I have a DTXpressII, and had I my time over again I would have gone with a module plus a regular shell pack with mesh heads. There's a whole ... geography issue with standard e-kits.

As for purchasing a module, would this [TD8] be an option
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The TD8 is a great module, no doubt.

You realise that eBay auction you linked is ONLY for the module, no pads, and that it'll probably reach over $700 by the end?

I suggest you have a wander around www.drumbalaya.com too, and maybe give them a call - Ed Morin (the owner) is genuinely independent and very knowledgable and helpful.

Andy I am curious about your reactions to the TD-20.

I played one in a store -- so my experience is not very strong. But they sure sounded good to me.

What do you think are the issues?

(I guess it really doesn't matter since I don't have the money anyway. But, I would like to hear more of your thoughts.)

Thanks moose.
Good to hear that the TD-8 is a good module. I also realize that ebay purchase may become more expensive, but that was just to illustrate what kind of setup I could see myself putting together.

Here's an example of what you could get for a grand new, retail:

Thanks for the link Moose. Looks promising. I think the next step will be to talk to a knowledgable drum shop employee
Still open to any suggestions...

Been doing some research and found something great.
http://www.rolandus.com/products/det...prodid=TD%2D3S

That's exactly the set up I am after. If you have time watch the demo videos, I think you'll find it sounds awesome. Weighs in at about 1000, so I will surely play it beforehand. Any comments on it?

MRhet,

I spent probably 20-30 hours going through the manual and testing (performing) out quite a few configurations of the parameters and none of them were satisfactory.

The biggest complaint (not to beat a dead horse) is the delay which is MORE obvious when you play in a band setting. The sound coming out of the monitor is ALWAYS delayed. So, if you want to play precisely on time you actually need to play way ahead of the beat. Very frustrating.

When I recorded the kit in the TD20 module and went out in the house to listen through the PA system it sounded GREAT! But once you sit behind it and your trying to get the groove happening it really falls short. Every other drummer I know who have played these live has said the same thing. The other musicians told me that they were frustrated with the sound. One vocalist told me it just didn't have the "crispness" of an acoustic set.

Another problem is the limited dynamic range. Sure you can crank these up as loud as the PA will take them...but my softest taps on the kit including the bass drum were below the trigger points so they were always inaudible. And yes I adjusted the trigger appropriately.

As a group we had tempo problems galore with the TD-20, problems that didn't exist with the acoustics.

Other than that I think it's a great practice and teaching tool, but not something to use when playing out.

Good luck,

Andy

(Peter, sounding great, man!)

Like I said, I am (luckily) only planning on using my set to practice at home. I have never experience this delay first-hand, but it sure sounds frustrating! You would think they wouldn't put products on the market with that problem...although it makes sense from the technical standpoint.

Suspiria,

I am kind of rushing this side of
it for you. I need an editor but I
wanted you to listen to me trying
out one of the on-board tunes,
which come with the DTX-TremeIIS.

None of it's really right but try
and focus on the snare sample, in-
cluding the rim shot and cymbals etc.

DTXremeIIS Sample

I will try and do more, later.

I'm looking at getting some electronics for practice too, and was thinking, what about getting one of the new octapads and adding a couple pads and kick drum pad? Would that work?
